Scholarship donors and many volunteers are in the midst of reviewing nearly 250 qualifying applications from Northshore graduating seniors. They will review applications and select finalists to be interviewed this month in person or virtually. One of the keys to impressing reviewers again this year is how applicants view the importance of service to school and community. One of our 50 scholarships offered again this year is the Service Above Self Scholarship which recognizes the service to others exemplified by the life of Egon Molbak and the well established company he founded in the 1950s in Woodinville.
As a requirement, the applicants were expected to answer the question “What does service to the community mean to you?” We share a few partial answers submitted this year.
“Community service is about more than just giving back; it's about being an integral part of a thriving and supportive environment.”
“It provides a platform for personal growth and development by teaching empathy, compassion, and leadership skills. Service to community is a fundamental aspect of being a good citizen, where everyone has a role to play.”
“Sure, starting community service for your school's (required) volunteer hours is common, but continuing that service after the minimum 100 hours are met is truly service to community. “
“To live in a better society, I believe that we must all come together, stand together, and accept our differences because we are more alike than we are not.”
“Service to the community is a mindset rather than a label. It is the constant asking of the question, how can my actions benefit those around me. When you are constantly thinking about your effect on others, community service becomes ingrained into your character. Minute actions, like helping someone with a problem or just listening, build up to create a better community.”
