Noting his 50-year dental practice in Woodinville, the family and friends of Dr. Jerry Bates have established a renewable scholarship to be awarded in 2023 to a Woodinville High School graduate.
The first recipient will be Graduate Number 2,271 to receive a Foundation scholarship since 1984.
The Dr. Jerry Bates Community Scholarship of $3,500 is designed to help a student who is in need of financial support to be able to continue higher education. Dr. Bates passed away January 1 this year. He is a 1960 graduate of Bothell High School, completed dental school at the University of Washington and served in the Navy before opening his own dental practice in Woodinville 50 years ago. He was a staunch activist of sports and community events in Woodinville.
A celebration of his life will be held June 26 from noon to 5 p.m. at Willis Tucker Park in Snohomish County.
The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, remembrances may be contributed to the scholarship being offered through the Scholarship Foundation, sent to P O Box 1773, Woodinville, WA 98072 or via PayPal at the Foundation’s home page at www.sf-ns.org. Donors should note their donation is to be credited to “Dr. Jerry Bates” on the credit line.
Scholarship applicants are asked what “service to others” means to them. In this newsletter series we report excerpts of their responses:
Ella - I am taking peer coaching as a yearlong course again, and am planning to participate in unified soccer, and bowling. I am also a science mentor at my school and help freshman in their biology class. This work has had a lasting impact on me and is what inspired me to pursue a career in Education.
