Shortly after graduation this month, Madalyn Bookout will begin a special 10-week internship June 20 at the Woodinville Weekly newspaper and onLine publication.
The 2022 North Creek High School graduate has been awarded the first Bryant Intern Scholarship of $6,000 to pursue practical experience in journalism as a reporter and writer before heading off to college to pursue a degree in journalism and Chinese studies. The intern scholarship is the second awarded this year by Woodinville resident Arlene Bryant, a retired journalist of the Seattle Times and Northshore Citizen. Bryant’s goal is to encourage young persons to seek a career as a professional journalist.
Madalyn told Bryant that “I am passionate about informing others about social issues like adolescents’ mental health, the effects of digital technology, and artificial intelligence, each of which dramatically impacts our day-to-day lives.”
Katie Li of Inglemoor High School is recipient of the first $5,000 Bryant Journalism Scholarship.
Shawn Gardner Memorial Scholarship — Featured this edition
Woodinville graduate Cosette Clinton will be attending Western Washington University in the fall, with plans to study Psychology, specifically in the field of helping children with learning disabilities.
“Just a few words I'd like to say to the founder of this scholarship, Karen Gardener, she is a completely amazing and inspiring individual. Her story makes me want to be the best possible version of myself and to help the most people I can in my future career, using my university education and passion for psychology. Moving forward I hope to honor Shawn's legacy and to give a voice for those who need it, or who feel like they haven't been heard. Again, thank you so much for this opportunity!”

Julia - “As a Peer Coach I was able to connect with numerous different kids with all different kinds of specials needs. The impact those kids left on me was like no other. They taught me how to find fun in the little things in life and they just created pure joy anytime I was around them.”
