Four winners breakfast with Woodinville Rotary
Woodinville Rotary devoted its June 14 meeting to getting acquainted and to honor the club’s four 2022 scholarships. The students with plaques (front, l to r) included Gracie Dinsmore, Suhani Aggarwal, Elias Haynes-Kiehn and Madalyn Garrison. Back, from left new Rotary president Sandy Kallio, past club president Andy Phillips, Scholarship Foundation of Northshore trustee Eric Greenwood and the Foundation’s scholarship program coordinator B-Z Davis.
A graduate of SAS, Gracie plans to use her $3,500 Rotary scholarship toward studies preparing for a life as a veternarian. She told her sponsor that “In the fall of 2022 I intend on attending Cascadia college to get my associates degree, then I hope to start in a vet tech program and eventually attend WSU for their veterinary program.” She plans to pay for college through loans, scholarships and working through school.
Suhani received the club’s first Rotary Presidents Memorial Scholarship in recognition of the service of club presidents Marv Workman, Jerry Wilmot, Steve Dolan and Max Zellweger. Club members and friends raised $5,000 for the scholarship. The North Creek High School graduate plans to attend the University of Washington to study business. Her goal is “to use the skills I learn in business to manage an existing or start a non-profit to reduce the education inequities within communities.
Elias and Madalyn each received the club’s $3,500 scholarships for Woodinville High School graduates.
Elias plans to attend Western Washington University pursuing a degree in business. His dream is to someday own a company, specifically in the skiing industry. He holds an associate degree in integrated studies through the Running Start program.
Madalyn’s intended field of study is zoology and she will enroll at University of Washington Bothell in the fall. “Animals have been a huge part of my life and have become my passion. I would love to own my own farm one day and work with animals. Participating in 4H and having raised my own ducks, chickens, and pigeons I fell in love with the idea of working with animals”. Maddie participated full time in Running Start this past year.
“Maddie” received a glowing recommendation from Woodinville Falcons head football coach Wayne Maxwell. “Madalyn was our first girl to ever play football at Woodinville High School. She showed tremendous work ethic in how she trains and prepares for football and how she succeeds in the classroom. From Madalyn’s great attitude and determination to succeed she was able to learn the game and learn her assignments at such a fast pace. As a result of Madalyn’s great work ethic, unselfish demeanor, and determination to learn - Madalyn earned the team’s 2021 Practice Player of the Year award.”
Since becoming a part of the Scholarship Foundation of Northshore in 1988, the club has contributed more than $600,000 for scholarships. The club is considering increasing the value of their scholarships in 2023.
Scholarship applicants are asked what “service to others” means to them. In this newsletter series we report excerpts of their responses:
ANON - “I presently give back to my community by volunteering at Evergreen Hospital and Sea Mar clinic where I am able to help doctors and nurses with tasks they have for me. Hospitals have been understaffed, and I am able to contribute my help with aiding in the pandemic.”
Good John!
