Donors encourage public service
One of the joys for those who are associated with the Foundation, be they be a donor or a volunteer, is to follow the college experiences of our scholarship winners as well as learning of their career plans.
In reviewing many applications in the selection process, donors pay close attention to how the applicants are engaged in service to others in their school and in their community. We have anonymously featured many 2022 recipients in our News from Hughes communiques over this year. We will continue to do so.
Let us introduce Foundation supporters to Esh Sathiyamoorthy, entering his senior year at the University of Washington. As a graduate of Woodinville High school in 2019, Esh received a renewable $2,500 Parker Moore Memorial Scholarship. A total of $10,000 to help with tuition and fees over four college years.
He is majoring in electrical and computer engineering.
Esh has made the Dean’s list at UW 5 times and he was named a Mary Gates Research Scholar in 2021. He hopes to attend graduate school to pursue a Masters in Data Science.
Looking to the future, “In terms of my occupation, 10 years from now I expect myself to be in a position where I can use my knowledge of software engineering and data science on a daily basis. I would like to have amassed enough technical knowledge in data science that my data visualization and analysis efforts can have a real impact on an important initiative. This initiative can be supported through a large corporation, or a small non-profit. What matters to me is that my efforts go towards a cause that truly affects real people.”
Esh has a busy schedule outside the classroom, too.
“Each year, I volunteer for the non-profit organization North South Foundation, which administers educational contests such as spelling bees for elementary and middle school students.
“Outside of school, I participate in a variety of extra-curriculars. I am currently the President of Kinspire, an education-focused registered student organization at the University of Washington. The club writes curriculum that video tutors use to teach students in orphanages in various locations in India.
“I am also a member of Project IF, an organization looking to farm fresh produce using sustainable methods, such as indoor hydroponics and aeroponics.”

Community Service Example
The Foundation would like to pay special tribute to a representative of one of our Donor Partners — Brittany Caldwell. She is prime example of someone who has devoted her life and her career in “service for others”. Scholarship applicants please take note.
Brittany leaves her role as executive director of Bothell Kenmore Chamber of Commerce to become director of the Cascadia College Foundation. Brittany’s 15 years with the chamber was feted at the chamber’s monthly meeting before a large public turnout October 27. Members and community leaders filled the Evergreen Church. They came to praise her. Bothell Mayor Mason Thompson summarized the community’s good feeling toward Brittany’s role through a “Proclamation of Appreciation” from the city of Bothell. Speaker after speaker related experiences in which Brittany has been an important, pivotal leader in bringing city government, the community and the chamber working together in service.
