Katie. Meet Jane!
Jane Wang is the 2020 graduate of Bothell High School who received the $14,000 renewable Richard C. Worthington Jr. Memorial Citizenship Scholarship. She will be starting her third year on the 143-acre campus of Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. The school was founded in 1764. The undergraduate enrollment is 10,000.
As a longtime print journalist, I was interested this spring to learn of one of Jane’s many new projects at the Ivy League school. She is studying Applied Mathematics and Literary Art and beginning her junior year.
In appreciation for the scholarship renewal, she writes: “Next semester, I will serve as the Managing Editor for The College Hill Independent, Providence’s only alt-weekly publication. I’m so excited to bring my contribution to the campus and the Providence community at large!”
She described her college experience to date: “From starting at UCLA in the midst of the pandemic and committing to an entire school year operating from home on my laptop, to making the decision to transfer to Brown, I’ve changed so much. After switching majors no less than three times, I have decided to double major.”
Jane is taking remote courses through Brown this summer.
Jane. Meet Katie!
The Foundation’s second student planning to attend Brown University is 2022 Inglemoor graduate Katie Li, recipient of the Bryant Journalism Scholarship. She lists English + Modern Culture and Media as her potential major fields of study at Brown.
In a note to scholarship sponsor Arlene Bryant, freshman Katie said: “Throughout undergrad, I look forward to exploring journalism through a variety of forms and topics. I’m excited to learn more about types of journalism I haven’t previously explored, like longer investigative pieces, and further consider its intersections with my other interests. I can’t wait to explore New England.”
Katie added: “I can’t wait to learn more about journalism and show you some of the pieces I write in the future.”
There just may be a connection “of interests” here. Will share contact information with each.
Scholarship applicants are asked what “service to others” means to them. In this newsletter series we report excerpts of their responses:
Cosette - volunteering through the Washington State Junior Grange on events and their annual summer camp, volunteering at my local Boys and Girls Club, and also volunteering through the Girl Scouts. I'm still a girl scout, and I have worked on both teaching workshops for younger scouts, and volunteering at Woodinville's annual day camp over the summer.
