The Wall of Honor committee of the Northshore school system was organized in 2010 and began partnering with the Scholarship Foundation in 2012. Larry Francois was school superintendent at the time and encouraged the collaboration. He was instrumental in the Woodinville Chamber of Commerce sponsoring an annual scholarship starting in 2013.
The first Wall of Honor Community Service and Humanitarian scholarship granted through the Foundation was awarded to 2014 Inglemoor graduate Chandler Olsen. It was for $2,000 and Chandler was headed to Montana State University to study mechanical engineering.
Prior to this year of 2022, the committee had awarded $27,000 in scholarships to eight graduates, made possible through its own fund raising efforts of those who continue to support scholarships. Selections for the Wall of Honor recognize alumni, staff and volunteers who have made outstanding contributions to the Northshore School District, its graduates and achievements of those throughout the world. A total of 99 names were added during that time.
In 2022 the committee will add another eight names. Of the 107, a total of 16 are of those who have been a part of the Foundation.
As word of the scholarship program began spreading this year, interest turned into action. Woodinville’s new Mayor Mike Millman made known that he favored his city and municipal governments in Kenmore and Bothell should consider appropriations for scholarships.
Mike responded to store manager Chris Sharick’s inquiry seeking ideas for his store’s civic engagement plans in Woodinville. The discussion led to Mike encouraging Haggen to help fund a second Wall of Honor scholarship in 2022. Sharick and Haggen did just that, donating $2,500 to make that happen.
So, in 2022 the committee has been able to award $10,000 in scholarships, $5,000 to George Ingebretsen of Woodinville High School with Haggen’s help and $5,000 to Joseph Riggio of Bothell High School.
George Ingebretsen plans to enroll at University of California, Berkley in pursuit of studies in the fields of electrical engineering and computer science.
Joseph Riggio is headed to University of Washington in Seattle to study political science.
