More and more Northshore education proponents are discovering the Scholarship Foundation of Northshore. Although our Donor Partners provide the bulk of the scholarship dollars awarded each year, the Foundation is grateful for a growing number of citizens who donate without targeting a specific purpose or scholarship.
These past two months, the Foundation has received more than $11,000 in unsolicited contributions that will be added to an account in the Foundation that provides a $5,000 Northshore Community Scholarship offered for many years. The Foundation was able to award three of those $5,000 scholarships in 2022 as a result of donations from the community at large in 2021.
The $11,000 is comprised of individual donations from $100 to $3,000. An office seeker sent the remainder of a campaign account. Another wanted to support the Music As Language scholarship program to complete an Apple and Android application for parents and teachers of those with non-verbal conditions. One family provided their annual donation of $1,000 right on schedule.
I’d like to share what one family said about giving:
“We are pleased and honored to have the opportunity to contribute to a noble local community organization. Again, thank you to the entire staff of the Scholarship of Northshore Foundation and the work you do as stewards of an important and needed path to future success for the youth in our community.
“Your stewardship and dedication to broadening the educational opportunities for so many Northshore School District students is to be commended.
“Our family has an established record of giving back and paying it forward in the communities in which we live and work. In general, my family would prefer to contribute to scholarship opportunities at the high schools in our local community that will most likely benefit from and respect. We live in a wonderful community and want to give back.
“My family moved to this school district area in the last several years and we, and our family student body members, have enjoyed a great student learning experience and have first hand experience with the related education strategy. So we just want to give back and support same. Giving back to our community transcends NSD, and is a giving back legacy we would like to pass on to our children vis a vis leading by example, but also sustain our community for our personal values and passions concurrently”.

Meet a Founding Trustee: Carl Knoll
The late Carl Knoll of Kenmore and Lake Forest Park was one of eight members of the Northshore Rotary Club to become among founding trustees of this Foundation. Coming to Kenmore from Enumclaw in the late 1950s, Carl established Knoll Lumber and Hardware on Bothell Way. The firm expanded to Woodinville and Mill Creek. He was active an officer in West Coast Builder associations and was generous in his Kenmore community both financially and with his time. He served as president of Northshore Rotary Club and was among members who hosted foreign exchange students. One was Yves Mosse of France, at Bothell High School in the 1960s, and presently a retired professor and government leader living in Nime. A scholarship was once offered in his name.
SERVICE to Others
We are beginning a weekly feature of this newsletter. “What about service to Community!” Each scholarship applicant is asked to describe what service to community and to others means to the applicant. Here we share an example:
Elias - my favorite thing was cleaning up the Yakima River. I am a very avid fly fisherman and my favorite river in the entire world is the Yakima. Last summer my friends and I thought it would be a great idea to go clean up the river.
Don’t miss a newsletter. Next week past president Eric Greenwood also weighs in on the impact of student loan debt.
